Free 2012 kids’ summer reading programs | Living On The Cheap

Summer reading programs have proven to be helpful in reducing “summer slide” or learning loss. Fortunately, FREE summer reading programs are readily available from public libraries, bookstores and retailers across the country. Start with your local public library and independent bookstores. Then check out these reading programs for summer 2012. None will cost you a dime and most offer prizes for kids who complete the programs.
  • PBS Kids Summer Reading Community Challenge. Sign up for a six-week program and receive a daily email with reading activities, challenges, book suggestions and chance to win prizes.
  • BookIt Summer Break Challenge. The familiar school-year reading program from Pizza Hut has a summer counterpart. Kids who were in grades K-6 last year read five books this summer to be eligible to enter a sweepstakes for a Diary of a Wimpy Kid prize package. The prize package includes a tote bag, two Diary of a Wimpy Kid books, a “Greg” plush doll and a $20 Visa Gift Card. Entries must be received by August 15, 2012.
  • Barnes & Noble Summer Reading. Kids read any eight books and record them in their reading journals. Bring the completed form to a local Barnes and Noble and get a free book.
  • DOD Summer Reading Program. Children of military families can participate in the Department of Defense summer reading program at bases and military installations worldwide. The theme for 2012 is “Reading Is So Delicious.” Activities will vary depending on location.
  • Pottery Barn Kids Summer Reading Challenge. For children under 10 years of age. Download an Early Reader or Award-Winning reading list at the Pottery Barn Kids website or pick one up at the store. When your child reads all of the books on the list, bring the completed list to a Pottery Barn store before August 31, 2012 and redeem it for a free book.
  • H.E.B Supermarkets H.E. Buddy 2012 Summer Reading Club. Kids will get a free HEB Buddy T-shirt from this Texas supermarket chain when they read 10 books and mail in a completed reading form postmarked by October 1, 2012.
  • National Amusements Bookworm Wednesdays. Kids get free admission to a select children’s film on Wednesdays at a participating Cinema de Lux, Showcase, or Multiplex when children bring in a book report. (Parents of participants get free admission too.) Children under 6 years old can get in free without a book report. National Amusements has theaters in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, and Rhode Island.
  • Scholastic “Read for the Record” Summer Challenge. Kids log their reading minutes each day which are then added to their school’s cumulative minutes. The top 20 schools will receive recognition in the 2012 Scholastic Book of World Records. When kids log their weekly allotment, they get to spin the “prize wheel.”
  • Chuck E. Cheese Reading Rewards. Print the Reading Rewards Calendar so kids can record their reading every day for two weeks. Redeem the completed calendar at Chuck E. Cheese for 10 free tokens. A food purchase is required.
  • Book Adventure by Sylvan Learning. Kids in grades K-8 can earn prizes by reading books and then taking quizzes to accumulate points. One of the nicer features of this site is the Book Finder, because it offers suggestions for books based on grade level, level of difficulty, and interest. You still have to find the books. Alternatively, you can look up a book your child has already chosen to see if there is a quiz available for it. There are almost 8,000 books in the database.

More free reading resources

These aren’t reading programs, but they are great free reading resources for kids:
  • Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. Parents of children under the age of five who live in eligible zip codes can sign up to receive a free, high-quality book each month.
  • Free Sesame Street eBooks. Bright, colorful online versions of books featuring kids’ favorite Sesame Street characters.
  • Barnes and Noble Free Online Storytime. A great selection of entertaining children’s books read by authors and celebrities. Barnes and Noble also has a kids’ club that offers discounts and rewards.
  • Storyline Online. Members of the Screen Actors Guild read popular children’s books.
  • FREE Scholastic Reading Timer App. Available for iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, and Android devices, the app features an interactive reading stopwatch to time reading minutes and a personal profile for each child that shows total minutes he or she has read. Book lists for kids ages 3-12 with suggestions for different kinds of readers are also included.

Save $$$ On Organic Eco Nuts® Soap Nus Laundry Detergent & Household Cleaner & Be Really Good To Your Skin Especially Those With Eczema...

Our family tried the laundry detergent and can't believe the difference in our clothing but also how soft and gentle it feels especially against irritated skin. Our youngest daughter has Eczema and many detergents and soaps irritate and inflame her condition. Eco Nuts is so gentle and doesn't bother her skin at all.
Eco Nuts® Soap Nuts are a berry that grows in the Himalayas that naturally produces a soap. The soap is called saponin, a natural cleaner that works as a surfactant, breaking the surface tension of the water to penetrate the fibers of your clothing, lifting stains from the fabric and leaving dirt suspended in the water that is rinsed away.

Eco Nuts are gentle on both clothes and skin, making them ideal for those with sensitive skin, eczema, allergies and psoriasis. Because they are so mild, they are perfect for baby clothes and cloth diapers. All-Natural Eco Nuts are also great for septic and grey water systems. But don’t expect these shells to foam up like commercial soaps, which have artificial foaming agents. Foam simply does not represent cleaning power.

Eco Nuts are wild-harvested, meaning they are gathered from wild trees grown without any kind of chemicals, fertilizers, or pesticides. The saponin actually tastes bad to insects so no pesticides are needed, and the trees naturally love poor uncultivated soil. They are organically grown by mother earth and certified USDA Organic by Oregon Tilth.

Sibling Love... How Do You Parents Out There Foster This Love?

Fostering Sibling Love

Today I found myself evaluating just how close our baby bunch is in terms of sibling love. I guess it makes sense given the fact that our newly turned 9 year old daughter just returned from camp after being gone from her family for a few days for the very first time. When we were pregnant with them one after another, we wanted so badly for them to be closer than anything and we still long for that. We want to make sure they have each others backs always and that they forever share their special bond in driving mom and dad nuts…and will forever be best friends. We never wished for a girl or a boy but rather just a healthy baby each time and that is what we were so very blessed with. As it turned out we had a girl, a girl, and then a boy in this baby bunch and the three of them couldn't be closer. There is always laughter especially those baby belly laughs and there are always tears for one reason or another and the three of them share in each other's laughter and tears with one of them usually being the cause of the one or the other. In discussing what makes them so close, gender always comes up but I can honestly say that gender isn't an issue but what is is how we as parents foster that sibling love between them. We are always aware of this and always adjusting our parenting styles to accommodate our children and their sibling bonds. Some have asked how we as parents foster the love between our kids?

Here are some key things that Greg and I did intentionally to foster all our children's love.

- Sibling Gifts: When  Fiona was first born, we let our two older children, Kimberly and Lily, pick out a stuffed animal to “gift” to Fiona. They each wrapped their stuffed animal, named it, and gave it to Fiona. There is something about giving a gift that makes you feel love for the recipient. We also had Fiona “gift” the girls something that was very specific to what they loved. So, it was the first start of establishing their relationship with the newest member of our family and so on. We do this with birthdays to add the element of surprise and to make them feel special too.
We gave Fiona a Cabbage Patch doll when Sabrina came home (14 months later) to foster a love for her baby from the get go instead of feeling jealousy towards the new baby and thus established her love and mother hen qualities when caring for her new baby. And then both girls were given charge of their new baby
brother.
From the beginning we fostered special nicknames between them for each other. There is something special to a meaningful nickname between siblings to creates a special bond that they don’t share with others.
- “Give one to Nana”. Give one to "Breenie". Give one to "Rexie". We also make them “give” and share things with each other. If one asks for a pretzel or a cookie when we're in the mall, they all get one and we encourage them to share with their brother and sister as if it were their idea and praise them so that their perspective is always one encomposing them all. One for all and all for one works!
- Team FSR! Treat them as a team together as much as possible. Make them high five, hug, and chest bump! They’ll get the sense really quickly that they are on the same team.
We continue to find new ways to encourage our children to be each others best friends because sibling love is so very important to both my husband and myself and would love to hear from our readers how you encourage close bonds in siblings.

Health Inside & Out With A Device For Meditation Stress Relief & Mindfulness With Dr. Andrew Weil & Dr. Deepak Chopra...

Our family invested in one of these for benefit of stress relief through meditation, maximum brain health through brain training and mindfulness, and just plain for the tranquility that we all need from our busy days being parents, managing our households, working, and what have you. I wasn't really sure how it was going to work but I have a really hard time managing my stress load and worrying about my family trying to juggle so many different things at once. My doctor prescribed medication for those moments when life gets really out  of control stressful that makes me really drowsy and not quite with it so taking that regularly or even once in a while is really just out of the question because I want to be alert and there for my children and my husband. Try as I might, I just could not seem to find the peace necessary for meditation because I am so busy in my thinking but when I got this device the world changed. It's amazing how easy it is to focus on what's at hand. It's almost like magic how well my brain responds and how awake and sharp I feel after I center or balance myself using this amazing program. It's definitely an other worldly experience when you are fully engaged. The doctors that accompany the meditation and mindfulness training are world renown for their natural and homeopathic approach in medicine and believe that our powers to heal ourselves and one another lay in our healthy mind body connection. We would highly recommend this device and program to anybody out there trying to achieve optimal balance, health, and well being in mind body and spirit.

THE CHILDREN'S BIBLE - online book - index page

In looking for a Child's Bible or Children's Bible stories online I came across this site & think it's definitely worth looking through and bookmarking for a digital version for when you're on the road or camping out or whatever you may be doing that makes taking a personal Bible impractical! THE CHILDREN'S BIBLE - online book - index page

Genesis 50:20 - ESV - Online Bible Study #DailyBible

Genesis 50:20 - ESV - Online Bible Study #DailyBible Our family has recently begun going to a new church which we are enjoying immensely (http://www.alicecoopersolidrock.com/the-rock/ http://genesis-church.com/new/home.html http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmD-UbdCa5A) that has an amazing new energy that is led by Lead Pastor Pat Stark through Genesis Church in Alice Cooper's long standing and commendable philanthropic reach into Phoenix, Arizona's youth (especially the at risk kids out there that are just waiting for somebody to show them direction.) We as a family have recently decided to commit to reading the Bible in 365 days and would love to have you join us in these pursuits and if you are here in Arizona, we would love to encourage you to join us on Sundays at 10 a.m. at The Rock Of 32nd Street at Thunderbird Rd. & 32nd Street for this dynamic worship hour! It is welcome to all denominations and an extremely inviting yet casual and relaxing live and let be environment! We sure hope to see you there! Right below here we capture the introduction to The Rock AT 32nd Street just to show you why we are so excited to be a part of such a phenomenal program and community offering...

“We are fulfilling a vision we’ve had for several years…to provide teens and children with a central place to learn, have fun, and explore their creativity in a supportive and safe environment. The Rock will be one of the first of many teen centers in Arizona and, ultimately, around the country.” – Alice Cooper

The Rock at 32nd Street Teen Center has been the dream and passion for Alice and Sheryl Cooper and the entire Solid Rock team for the past 12 years. The time has finally come to make that dream a reality. A collaboration of Alice Cooper’s Solid Rock and Genesis Church, The Rock ministers to teens through the music, dance, art, vocational training in sound, lighting, and staging, and fellowship in a safe facility. With so many public schools forced to cut vital programs like music and dance due to lack of school funding, The Rock will cultivate a love of the arts to inspire and challenge teens to choose artistic excellence instead of drugs, guns, or gangs. Who knows what amazing performers, choreographers and producers might come from The Rock?

Some Great Parenting Tips...

Some Great Parenting Tips

General Family

Have dinner together (at the dinner table) on a regular basis.  Use it as a time for interaction.  Avoid interruptions- no answering the phone, no texting, etc.

Plan family nights consistently.  Whether it means going out together or a movie night at home, schedule time to be together having fun.

Schedule one on one time with your children.  Kids love to feel special.

Get to know your child’s likes and dislikes; favorite color, favorite teacher, least favorite food, etc.

Make sure you express unconditional love for your children often.

When your child does something you appreciate, make sure to thank them.  Kids want to be acknowledged.

Parents need to give consistent messages.  If kids think they can play one parent against the other, it is a recipe for disaster.

When parents are encountering problems (i.e. marital problems, stress at work) children often pick up on the stress.  Children often believe that the parent is stressed because the child did something wrong.  It is important to assure the child that they are not the cause of the problem and they are still loved.

Teens

Teenagers need to understand that they have limits.  Make expectations clear and follow through with enforcement.

While it is natural for teens to want independence, make sure you are spending time with them regularly.  Maintain your connection.  If you lose it, it is very difficult to get it back.

Make your home a gathering place for your teens friends.  Get to know the friends.

Be clear with your teen when you will respect their privacy and when you feel the need to get more information from them.

School-Age Children

Give children light chores.  It helps them develop a sense of responsibility.

Make sure children are getting enough physical activity.  Limit T.V. and video games.

Do not over-schedule your child in sports, activities, music etc.  Strike a healthy balance.

Toddlers

Set limits.  Stop inappropriate/dangerous behavior.  Remove the child from danger.  Explain the danger briefly in understandable terms.  Don’t try to reason with a toddler beyond his/her level of reasoning.  Redirect the child to another activity.

“Catch” a child being good.  Reinforce positive behavior.

Occasional temper tantrums are a natural expression of attention-seeking and limit testing.  Remove the child to a quiet area until the behavior changes.  Ask the child to let you know when they are ready to act differently.

Develop a morning routine (not too rigid).  Start with several minutes of interaction (a brief “together”  time).  Have a personal hygiene and breakfast routine.

At age 3 or 4, allow kids to pick out their own outfits to wear (activity and weather appropriate).  It encourages development of a small level of independence.

Set some “one to one” time each day with each child.

Infants

For the first six to eight weeks of life, you are totally on their schedule.  You are responding to their needs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

At age 6 to 8 weeks, you can begin to try to introduce routines.  More attempts can be made to structure eating schedule, sleeping schedule, bath time, etc.  Don’t try to push this too hard.  From day one, try to read to your child daily.  Continue this through toddler years.  Many studies have been done on brain development to support this.

Develop playtime routines at a very early age.  Physical interaction, smiling, talking, and toys that stimulate brain development are important.

Great Alice In Wonderland Collectibles...

I have been shopping all morning for a special gift for a little girl that's wild about Alice In Wonderland and I can't believe the cute finds I've come across and just thought I'd share some of them for any of you out there just crazy about this great Disney classic too!
